BORNEO POST JANUARY 21ST 2009(WEDNESDAY).
State to relax laws on migrant labour
Move to allow semi-skilled foreign workers to work in various sectors in preparation for SCORE.
KUCHING: Sarawak will relax its immigration policy to open up the state in a controlled way to allow semi-skilled immigrant workers to be employed in the various sectors in preparation for the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, however, said the influx of foreign workers would be dictated by the demand for specific workforce, including in the palm oil plantation and construction industries.
“In fact in Sarawak, we do not see foreigners roaming about (changing jobs) from one sector-based job to another while local employers are allowed to import migrant workers from time to time within a quota allocated by the Immigration Department,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Sarawak Business Summit yesterday.
“If these migrant workers are not behaving well or productive enough, it’s up to the employers to deport them,” he said.
The two-day event, themed ‘Towards Sustainable Development for Continued Prosperity, Growth and Stability’, was organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute.
SCORE’s main energy intensive industries are expected to create 1.5 million job opportunities for skilled, technical and professional workers by 2030, when the state is undergoing its second phase of transformation.
Speaking to reporters later, Taib said Sarawakians working outside the state and facing unemployment due to the global recession could return if their skills fit the jobs available.
On another matter, Taib said companies seeking government help to ease their operation costs amidst the global economic slowdown should thoroughly explain their cases first.
If they did so, then the government could decide whether they deserved the help or not, he said.
“I want to see their case first. It is not that easy to do things otherwise. Look at what happened to America. They ask for so many things but it is not taking effect.”
Some associations for several sectors including Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Sheda), Associated Chinese Chambers and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) and Sarawak Manufacturing Association, had voiced the need to reduce certain charges or fees to help cushion the effects of the economic downturn.
On Friday, Sheda urged Sesco to take up the connection charges-capacity charge plus low tension charge as its investment cost.
It said the charges should not be solely borne by the developers or end-users.
It explained that capacity charge is paid for the development of high-tension system regardless of whether there is high tension installation work or not while low-tension charge is paid for the development of low tension system which includes underground, overhead lines, pillars, street lightings and services required for connection of electricity supply to the development.
In this respect, Sheda proposed “a more reasonable rate on the connection charges — comparable to what Tenaga Nasional Berhad is charging — and for a unitised rate applicable throughout the state”.
The association said Sesco connection charges were the highest in the country, adding that it could be as much as RM17,000 per house for underground supply, which was four to five times higher than what was being charged by Tenaga Nasional in Peninsular Malaysia.
ACCCIS, meanwhile, urged the authorities to reduce the prices of things they had control over, for example tax and electricity charges.

Ah Long Should be SUPP's people...then what i feel curious is, what has SUPP done as a goverment party.
Dear Mr. Ah Long,
Think twice b4 your speak! We will in better life if Our Current Gov practice 50% of what singapore gov is doing.
Please dont talk like BN is t king. What is t role of Gov? Suck the people o Help t people? You have the answer. Happy Chinese New Year!
U all talk shit.. if u say the gov not doing anything, then what DAP PKR kuching had done... they didn't kasih ang pow to the flood victims.. Gov do.. why DAP cannot..bfroe this DAP said semenanjugn DAP can... but in SArawak NO NO NO nothing been fullfill.. talk shit only
If u say why Singapore gov can? then i ask u why pakatan gov in Penang, kedah, selangor n kelantan not follow singapore's way???? once again u all talk shit...
Dear ah long,
gov should take care of the development and welfare stuffs for a very simple reason....they collect taxes and manage the funds. greater power comes with greater responsibility. our gov should solve problems permanently but not act like 'Santa' or 'Choi Sen', only give some 'ang pao' and then appear on the newspapers.
it seems like 'small' parties in BN (MCA, SUPP, MIC....ect) not involve much in policy making (maybe no chance or no ability) but only handle some small cases such as helping well performed students enter the local uni which they deserve to have (cause by BN-way governing) and 'ah long' problems (fortunately here i refer to long shark problems...i'm sorry but not apology if i make anyone here feel uncomfortable)
shouldn't we start to think about 'change' and reject those 'poisoned honey' from our current gov. it might be a difficult process but the future would be better and brighter. NO PAIN NO GAIN.....

DEAR AH TOH
when gov do development and provide assistance to the rakyats, that means u get it also.. like the 625 for car owner... the subsidi for fuel oil... IF U don't get it, how can your car MOVE... although the amount is not big, but it can help a little. better than nothing from DAP although they say pakatan Gov in semenanjung can...
On loan shark matter, I 100% agreed that to registered them as license loan provider, in order to control them... from there the gov can collect some tax, better than nothing in the past.. Me Ah Long r one of them.. and the raise of crime is bcos of the illegal imigrant...
Ah toh, ah toh
u so childist on the uni student where got ah long problems.. what they had been trouble with is the BIG BANK LOAN SHARK.... not us the small businessman... which owned by BUMI that want more returnss..
talkign about TAX.. where r they gone to... for development.. subsidy for fuel, subsidy for imported goods, medical assistance, public infrastructure, welfare funds, education assistance and funds, n a lot more... where got gov that collect tax and KEEP it... for sure they will use it to benefit the rakyats.. what u get today may be from the tax collected.. think about it.. and don't always criticise..
dear ah long
isn't that better to create proper & reliable public transports than spend money on fuel subsidy?
think about it....do we have any other choices beside our own private vehicles? the answer is "NO". what about if the price of crude oil climbs to more than
US$200/barrel? are we gonna stay at home due to the high fuel prices or we just listen to the BN gov who always ask people to "tukar gaya hidup" whenever they wanna raise petrol price?
it's very clear that BN gov only look after the interest of some parties? should i say Proton, Petronas, PLUS, mostly financial institutes owned by BUMIPUTRA....and ect
so, without a good public transportation system, i'm sure that it will leave you no choice but to treat ur own car as a 'need' but not a 'want' in your life even the petrol price reaches RM10/L.
we are the net exporter of crude oil but our fuel prices (petrol & diesel) are higher than indonesia which is now a net importer of crude oil. isn't that amazing??? LOL
i agree that taxes collected are for development and bla bla bla...
those things involve buying/selling process which also so-called value exchange process...but the value we got from those process always inadequate with the money our BN gov spent. once again thanks to our BN gov....maybe their intentions were to keep the fund flow in our country to make our economy better??? what would you do to the CEO of your company if it is in deficit for 11 yrs continuosly due to their poor management? 'sotong goreng' or just turn an eye blind? look at what had our BN gov done for the past 11 yrs? ALL MALAYSIANS ARE THE BOSS HERE, 'GORENG' BN GOV, CHANGE THE CEO OF OUR COUNTRY. LET THE RIGHT PEOPLE WORK FOR US!!!
